In Your Arms - Kina Grannis
I didn’t understand why Kina was giving out free jellybeans at her concert. I wasn’t complaining.
Days later, I see this. Which is just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!
I was treated by a friend to the Kina Grannis show at 9:30 Club. I hadn’t heard of her before, but here’s some fun facts I’ve learned about her.
- She’s an alumni of Kollaboration LA! (I volunteer with Kollaboration DC.)
- She’s shorter than me and she’s super awkward and nerdy, just like me!
- I mean this in no offense, but she is way prettier than her promo pictures and her voice is 10x more amazing live than recorded.
- She can only tell one joke and it was so bad that my friend had to explain it to me before I got it.
- She won the Doritos’s Super Bowl music contest and her music has been featured on Gossip Girl.
Oh and her opening act, Imaginary Friend, is a cutie. I was forced to pat his head after I told my friend (who is a guy and doesn’t get these things) that I thought the guy was “so cute that I just want to pat him.”
Birdy - Just A Game
Maybe I’m late to the game*, but I’m obsessed with Birdy. She zens me out like no other artist I’ve heard in the past two years. Here’s a song to toast the TGIF celebrations for a relaxing weekend.
*No, that was not a failed attempted at being cunning. That was me not having the energy to fix the cringe-worthy sentence.
…be spontaneous. Last year around this same time, I spontaneously booked a week long trip home to San Francisco for August because Virgin Air had a 7 hour sale. This is gonna quell my homesickness.
It looks like my spontaneity is not so. I got my tickets for SF Outside Lands in August and managed to inspire several of my DC friends to come with. On top of that, lots of my friends from home are going too.
I’m not a big fan of music festivals, but this was just too good to pass up. Just look at the lineup! And if last year’s food vendors are any indication of 2012, I’m coming back as one plump piggy - although this is a given.
This is gonna be hella insane.

Volta Bureau - Alley Cat
Apparently, it’s a big deal that a UK label is going to release this song. I think it’s a bigger deal that it’s good music in general.
Last Friday I was in full on TGIF mode. So much so, I even tweeted about it. I was packed and ready for a last minute weekend in Baltimore. And even though my weekends in Baltimore are much more tea-sipping rather than beer-sipping, I wanted to blast a party song.
I’m not sure why this song came to mind, but it was on repeat the entire day. In hindsight, I’m slightly ashamed that I chose to listen to this song more than once.
If you’re in a IDGAF mode, just blast it.

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Aloe Blacc
Confession: I didn’t know a single thing about Aloe Blacc before “I need a dollar.”
Just when I thought I was starting to feel cool, I get schooled. There has to be others like me out there, right? If so, Paris DJs has compiled an hour-long mixtape of Aloe Blacc’s discography from 1999-present. It’s my type of work music - jazzy, smooth vocals, with a little bit of a head bob.
