The Metanerd

The name is Bella. I live in DC, but you would think I live in San Francisco from the way I blog about it. I love to talk about how nerdy I am, even though my friends say I'm pretty cool.

Has anyone else noticed how convoluted Facebook has become? A friend and I were trying to figure out how to make her tagged pictures accessible again. After half an hour of clicking on every button imaginable, it turns out that you have to change the settings for every single picture.

Facebook isn’t the first to do this to us. Think of all the new layouts of Twitter that we’ve been seeing recently. Think way back in the day with Myspace. If you dare, think even further back to Xanga. All the increases in features had a adverse effect and caused users to find the next big thing.

Despite Tumblr’s similarity to Xanga (admit it, your first ‘blog’ was either on Xanga or LiveJournal), I love that Tumblr hasn’t changed much in its core functionality as a blogging platform. Sure, the community is more visual than WordPress, but the way we post hasn’t changed much.

New isn’t always good. If something isn’t broken, don’t fix it. I think we need to slow down and take those idioms to heart more. Keep things simple and be easy.

I just don’t get it. It just seems like Tumblr with a little bit of Delicious (even though that’s dead now) flair thrown in. What’s so special about it that’s got everyone and their mom opening an account?

Can someone please explain Pinterest to me?

These results are more than just cool and record-setting. Observations with the Hubble Space Telescope over the years have shown that such monster black holes seem to inhabit the centers of all galaxies — the bigger the galaxy, the bigger the black hole. Researchers said that the new work could shed light on the role these black holes play in the formation and evolution of galaxies.

And the nerd is back on her Droid. I just couldn’t stay away from technology.

I don’t know why, but this is one of my favorite videos of Steve Jobs. It’s him presenting a proposal for a new Apple Campus in Cupertino to the City Council. It was shot just a few months before his passing and feels like one of his most human moments.
